Description

What we can capture from our backyards (in this case bortle 7) is truly astonishing and never to be taken for granted.  The crop of the pillars (LBN670)...astonishing from am 81mm scope...right!  I've learned to have lots of patience with backyard imaging...need lot of time, but results are well astonishing.

This is such an often imaged target that we might tend to only quickly look.  So what's going on here?  I did a bunch of reading on it.  A good short description can be found on from Waid Observatory:  SH2-199 is a large star forming emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia approximately 7,500 lightyears distance.  The nebula is a very young celestial object with new stars currently forming in the complex clouds and pillars being compressed by the stellar winds and radiation emitted by the large hot central stars.  W5 (Westerhout-5) radio telescope studies have determined the stars on the peripheral clouds surrounding the large blue areas are younger than the central star clusters.  This supports the findings of gas and dust being pushed outward and compressed triggering new stellar birth.

PS - some of you know I've been touring in Germany for past 2 weeks.  had a wonderful time in this beautiful country.  What great bier!   (cloudy every night though!)  We were supposed to leave today, but 2 days ago I came down with Covid, even though full boosted and bivalent and masked up everywhere.  I'm stuck in a hotel in Berlin, been on my back for 2.5 days like a bad flu (Covid is no joke), but a few hours ago I started to feel better.  Hope to go home in 3 or 4 days.  -john
